About Betty H. Olson
I’m a dedicated and passionate leader committed to enhancing our community's water management systems. With a background in water and a deep commitment to public service, I am running for the Santa Margarita Water District Board of Directors to ensure a reliable and safe water supply for all residents.
My journey in water management began with a fascination for how our arid state successfully delivers water to every tap. This led to an illustrious academic career that began with undergraduate and doctoral degrees from UC Irvine and UC Berkeley, respectively. As a professor at UC Irvine, I have taught at the School of Social Ecology and in the Henri Samueli School of Engineering's Department of Environmental Engineering. I am most proud of my work mentoring over 40 students.
I am committed to addressing the complexities of our local water supply. The Board of Directors plays a crucial role in overseeing procurement, repairs, construction, and the delivery of water, ensuring that clean water flows seamlessly into our homes. To meet these challenges, we must be innovative and pragmatic.
Throughout my career, I have been an advocate for sustainable water practices and innovative solutions. I championed the construction of the Upper Chiquita Reservoir near Tesoro High School, enhancing water storage for summer reliability and preventing major shortages. I also supported the purchase of capacity in the El Toro Reservoir, further increasing water reliability.
The Trampas Reservoir, completed in December 2023, holds 5,000 acre-feet of water (1.2 billion gallons) and is moving the Santa Margarita Water District closer to 100% recycled water usage with zero ocean discharge. By expanding recycled water usage, the reservoir helps supply irrigation for landscaping to homeowner associations, schools, and commercial areas, thereby preserving drinking water for residents and reducing costs.
I believe in the power of community and service. With your support, I’ll champion initiatives that ensure a safe, reliable, and efficient water supply for all.
